A new air-quality monitoring station has been set up at 2700 Harrison Ave.

El Paso now has six monitoring stations located throughout the city. The station cost about $30,000.

The unit measures fine particulate matter in the air that reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy when concentrations are high. The main source of the pollution is vehicle exhausts.

Data collected from the air-quality monitoring stations is reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Fine particulate matter can pose a health risk, especially for people with respiratory conditions such as asthma. It can also cause eye, nose, throat and lung irritation.
